Nice-cream recipes to start your day!

Apr 28, 2022

So what is 'nice-cream'? It's basically a healthy version of ice-cream!

I find blending my fruit and veggies is easier on digestion and doesn't make me feel so sluggish.

You know that feeling when you have a big Sunday breakfast with toast, eggs, bacon and baked goods and all you want to do is go back to sleep?

Whilst I love a good Sunday breakfast like the one described above, I can't have that feeling when I'm about to begin teaching my morning classes!

One of the many benefits of nice-cream is that it's packed with lots of beneficial phytonutrients.

Okay, but what’s a ‘phytonutrient’ I hear you say?

Phytonutrient; a substance found in certain plants which is believed to be beneficial to human health and help prevent various diseases.

According to the Institute of Functional Medicine we should aim for 9-13 servings of plants foods (every single day!) and it’s important to know where they come from.

In addition, we should eat a rainbow of colours and always mix it up by trying different combinations whilst always trying to choose more nutrient dense options (think sweet potato over regular potato).

Since nice-cream and smoothie bowls have become more popular, critics have called them ‘high calorie sugar bombs’...

Let's be clear, sugars found in fruits and vegetables are VERY different to the sugars found in soft drink or desserts like real ice-cream.

As long as you're living an active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight and meals throughout the day are sensible and regular, you really don’t need to be worried about eating too much fruit.

I also like to remind people, no one has ever died from eating too much fruit!

I hope you enjoy these combinations and take note of how energised and vibrant you feel. Personally, my skin and eyes are clearer when I’m sticking to a smoothie bowl of a morning!

You’ll notice that most of the fruit is frozen before blending – this gives it the ‘ice-cream’ texture. You can also add all these ingredients together unfrozen but the consistency will be more like a smoothie.

How do I blend it all together?

I personally use a Vitamix but almost any blender will do the job!

What muesli do I use to garnish?

I always use Brookfarm gluten free muesli which is the best (I receive absolutely no money from them to say that!).

Where do I find wonderful ingredients like spirulina?

You can usually find these types of ingredients at your local health food store, however I’m a fan of Flannerys (again I receive no money to say that! I just love them!)

How did I come up with all the nice-cream names?

I compared the ingredients to the Institute of Functional Medicines Phytonutrient Spectrum
