10 Steps To Begin Pointe Work

Feb 04, 2023

As a budding ballerina, you've probably been dying to start pointe work. It's a big milestone in your dancing journey!

Here are 10 steps to help you prepare for this exciting journey...

1. Get strong: Pointe work takes a lot of strength, so make sure you're taking class regularly and doing extra conditioning at home. Cardio, squats, and Pilates are great exercises to help build strength in your legs and feet.

2. Book in for a pre-pointe assessment: If you're serious about starting pointe work, it's a good idea to book in for a pre-pointe assessment with an experienced dance physiotherapist. This will help them determine if you have the necessary strength and technique to start pointe work safely.

3. Get professionally fitted for pointe shoes: This is an important step! Make sure you get fitted by a professional who knows what they're doing. The right pair of shoes will make all the difference in your pointe work experience – both in terms of comfort and injury prevention...

4. Go slowly: When you begin pointe work, experienced teachers will ensure you go slowly at first and incrementally increase the amount of time you're spending doing pointe in class. Overdoing it at first will only lead to injuries. Expect to be on the barre for at least 6 months!

5. Practice with a barre: Do as much of your practice on the barre as possible, so it's easier to go slowly and make sure you're using proper technique.

6. Strengthen your ankles: Make sure you do ankle stretches and exercises regularly (calf raises!) – this will help prevent injury when en pointe.

7. Get help from a pro: If you're having trouble with any of the steps in pointe work, it's always helpful to get advice from an experienced teacher or coach who can help you troubleshoot your technique. Don't turn to YouTube or free online content created by other students. Seek advice first and foremost from your teacher or a reputable source.

8. Listen to your body: This is key! Pay attention to how your body feels and make sure you're not overextending or pushing yourself too hard. Take breaks when you need to, and don't be afraid to stop if your body is telling you something isn't right. Pointe work can be slightly uncomfortable, but it's not supposed to hurt.

9. Don't rush the process: Pointe work takes time and patience, so make sure you give yourself the time you need to progress safely.

10. Have fun: Remember to enjoy the process and celebrate your accomplishments – you're working hard to reach this milestone in your dancing career!

Hopefully these tips will help you get started on the right foot (pun intended) with beginning your pointe journey.

Good luck and most importantly enjoy the journey whilst having fun!

Peace & Pliés,
